Book a Stay at Castaway Bay
Thank you to Castaway Bay for sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions on our stay are my own.
Our Spring Break weather was pretty frightful, so we escaped to Castaway Bay for a tropical stay on the shores of Lake Erie. With 237 recently renovated rooms and suites, a 38,000 -square-foot indoor waterpark, a variety of gaming attractions, a number of unique restaurants, shops and adjacent marina; Castaway Bay is a one-stop, family destination designed to make family vacations easy and memorable.
Castaway Bay is located in Sandusky, Ohio, a short drive from Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit, and Columbus, making it a very close tropical destination. We had the opportunity to spend a lovely weekend at Castaway Bay, and my kids are already discussing when we can make a return trip.
Stay
Our first impression upon arrival was how clean it was, and throughout the weekend my husband and I noticed and commented on how hard the staff worked to keep up on the cleaning. I’m sure it was no small feat! We were quickly checked in at the front desk and were given the lay of the land by the friendly staff members.
Castaway Bay features 237 newly renovated guest rooms and suites. Each floor is themed to match a specific island setting: Air, Land, and Sea. We checked into our room on the third floor and experienced a the cutest jungle themed room that overlooked the bay through a large porthole window.
Accommodations at Castaway Bay feature amenities including flat-screen TVs, free wireless internet, a microwave, and mini-refrigerator. Many rooms provide access to adjoining rooms or different room layouts which make it a great stay for large families or groups.
We were very comfortable in the space, but were so busy experiencing the rest of what Castaway Bay had to offer, that we didn’t spend a lot of time in the room.
Dine
There are six different dining options to choose from during your stay at Castaway Bay, ranging from grab-and-go snack shacks to cafes, to sit-down dining options. We loved loading up on the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Hightide Cafe each morning. For lunch, we took advantage of the Surfside Beach Bar, so we didn’t have to leave the waterpark. And for dinner, we dined at the Quaker Steak & Lube, which is connected by an indoor hallway to the resort, so we didn’t even have to step outside! So many different dining options under one roof makes it easy to feed the family during the weekend stay.
Play
Now, for the real reason why we visited Castaway Bay, to play! We were so excited to check out the 38,000-square-foot indoor water park, where the water is heated to a lovely 82 degrees year round. The water park features a nice variety of activities for all ages. Our favorite attractions included Hank’s Hangout of gushing water fun, the 100,000 gallon wave pool, the indoor/outdoor hot tub, school crossing and all the water slides. Rocket’s Canopy Coaster is Northern Ohio’s exclusive water coaster and was the biggest hit of the weekend for my family. My kids couldn’t get enough of that ride!
I was really impressed with how seriously water safety was taken in the water park. Staff were constantly checking height and handing out life vests when required. I had my children in my sight at all times, but had I not, I would have felt very good about their safety in the water park.
Gamer’s Grotto is a fun option for a way to play when it’s time to dry off. This 6,000-square-foot arcade had so many fun games that kept my children entertained for a very long time. We loaded up a game card and off they went into the arcade to play racing games, claw games, and other games where they could rack up tickets to redeem at the prize booth.
Mini-bowling, blacklight mini-golf, and an escape room are also fun ways to play at Castaway Bay. We love mini-golf as a family, so we took advantage of the 9-hole blacklight mini-golf course. From the outside, it looked like an easy course, but some of those holes were a challenge!
The free, family-friendly programming happening throughout the day at Castaway Bay is a really nice touch. We enjoyed interacting with the costumed animal mascots and staff members throughout the space, and a bright and beautiful craft room was open for creation each day. My children loved participating in the staff-led activities, including, yoga, trivia night, and dancing the night away at the kids dance party.
We really tried to fit everything in, but there is so much to see and do at Castaway Bay, that we couldn’t do it all. We truly had the best time on our little getaway to Castaway Bay and can’t wait to return!
